Sequential Variety in Work Processes
نویسنده
چکیده
Task variety is a familiar concept in organization theory and in job analysis. Standardized scales to measure task variety have been developed and shown to be reliable, but results reported here suggest that while these scales may measure the number of different tasks performed, they do not measure variety in work process. Comparing results from the standard, survey-based measures and detailed, process-based measures in four task units, we discovered that work processes in the most “routinized” task units (as measured by the standard scales) are more varied than the least “routinized” task unit. The theoretical implications of this new concept, sequential variety, are discussed.

Two forms of variety have been noted in organizational processes: sequential and configural. These describe variations in how a work process is ordered (sequential) or what is involved in enacting each work activity (configural). Each has been mainly studied in isolation. In organizations, these two types of variety are always co-present and scholars will miss important insights if their depend...
متن کاملRobust Sequential Approximate Bayesian Estimation
An approximation tothe sequential updating of the distribution flocation parameters of a linear time series model is developed for non-normal observations. The behaviour of the resulting non-linear recursive filtering algorithm isexamined and shown to have certain desirable properties for a variety of non-normal error distributions. Illustrative examples are given and relationships with previou...

The article by Oortwijn, Jansen, and Baltussen (OJB) is much more important than it appears because, in the absence of any good general theory of “evidence-informed deliberative processes” (EDP) and limited evidence of how they might be shaped and work in institutionalising health technology assessment (HTA), the best approach seems to be to accumulate the experience of...
متن کاملPattern Structure and Rule Induction in Sequential Learning
When presented with structured sequences to learn, do nonhuman animals abstract and learn relational information—do they induce and learn rules? This paper provides an overview of the current evidence that bears on this question from our recent behavioral and psychobiological research on rat sequential learning. Evidence is presented that rats are sensitive to hierarchical structure in response...

In this study, demineralization of cheese whey by sequential nanofltration (NF) and electrodialysis (ED) methods was investigated. For the NF step, two NF membranes labeled as NF-270 and NF-90 were tested. Approximately 90% of protein and lactose rejections were obtained with partial demineralization during NF step. For full demineralization of the NF permeate, NF follo...
